Free Knitting Pattern: Brunia Knit Scrunchie

Originally published on yarnbean.com in June 2021.

Crocheters seem to get all of the scrunchie love – have you noticed that most scrunchie patterns are written for crocheters? I’ll admit that even my first scrunchie pattern was for crocheters – you can check it out here! I just think that knitting brings such a great texture to scrunchies. That’s why I’m happy to bring you this super easy, beginner-friendly knit scrunchie pattern! This scrunchie is worked up as a flat piece that is then sewn up around a hair elastic.

I love these scrunchies because:

  • They are easy and are great for beginners – this pattern uses foundational skills

  • Stash buster – this pattern is great for your stash of scrap weight 3 or weight 4 yarn

  • Quick and easy – these scrunchies can work up in as little as 20 minutes!

This pattern is written up in two parts, with two different weights of yarn:

  • weight 3 (light/DK)

  • weight 4 (medium/worsted/aran)

There are a few foundational knitting skills that you need to know for these patterns. I’ve included links to youtube videos to help explain these techniques if they are unfamiliar to you!

  1. Stockinette stitch – see a tutorial from youtube here.

  2. Knit cast on – see a tutorial from youtube here.

  3. Standard bind off – see a tutorial from youtube here.

You will also need to know how to crochet the slip stitch. If you’re not familiar with this technique, check out a youtube tutorial here.

Weight 3 (Light/DK Weight) Brunia Scrunchie

Supplies Needed:

  • 5mm knitting needles

  • 4mm crochet hook

  • ~40 yards of weight 3 yarn (for these photos I used Lion Brand’s Mandala yarn because I love the unique touch of variegated yarn!)

  • Hair elastic – I exclusively use these Goody elastics that are available for a great price at Amazon

  • Scissors, tape measure, and yarn needle – I love this set of metal yarn needles from Amazon

Instructions:

  1. Using the knit cast on, cast on 62 stitches.

  2. Knit the first row.

  3. Purl the second row.

  4. Continue in stockinette stitch until you have 17 rows.

  5. Cast off using the standard bind off.

  6. Carefully slip the loose loop off of your knitting needle and insert your 4mm crochet hook.

  7. Take your hair elastic and wrap your flat piece length-wise (hot dog style), with the wrong sides touching, around the elastic.  With the crochet hook, slip stitch the two ends of the strip together all away around the hair elastic. This will enclose the hair elastic completely. At the end of your work, slip stitch and fasten off.

  8. Cut a tail approximately 12 inches long. You’ll notice that there is a gap between the beginning and end of the scrunchie – we’re going to fix this! Slip your tail through a yarn needle and sew the two ends of the scrunchie together so that there is no longer a gap.

9. Once the gap has been sewn together, make a knot and weave in your ends. With these scrunchies, I like to feed the ends of the yarn through the empty cavity of the scrunchie.

Weight 4 (Medium/Worsted/Aran Weight) Brunia Scrunchie

Supplies Needed:

  • 5 mm knitting needles

  • 4 mm crochet hook

  • ~35 yards of weight 4 yarn

Instructions

  1. Using the knit cast on, cast on 46 stitches.

  2. Knit the first row.

  3. Purl the second row.

  4. Continue in stockinette stitch until you have 13 rows.

  5. Cast off using the standard bind off.

  6. Carefully slip the loose loop off of your needle and insert your 4mm crochet hook.

  7. Take your hair elastic and wrap your flat piece length-wise around the hair elastic.
