Free Crochet Pattern: The Lochan Enamel Pin Banner

Originally published on yarnbean.com in September 2023.

The Lochan Pin Banner is a free wall hanging crochet pattern that features a simple, textured banner that is perfect for displaying your favorite enamel pins.

Hello crochet friends! It has been a long time (nearly a year and a half!) since I shared my last crochet pattern. Life has been hectic but I’m stoked to get back into designing and sharing all of my creations and patterns with you.

The finished product of this banner is a 15 inch, textured banner that can easily be displayed on a wall, window, or cork board. The texture of this banner is designed to safely hold your enamel pins and their backings in place. This banner is perfect for displaying your enamel pin collection, or even jewelry!

  • Quick and easy – this pattern can be finished in a couple of hours and features a repeating stitch (lemon peel stitch) that’s easy to memorize

Do you spend a lot of time crocheting at night? I HIGHLY recommend one of these portable, hands free lights! It allows me to work on my projects late into the night without my bothering anyone else in the house…

Instructions

To start, chain 40.

Row 1: SC into the 2nd chain from the hook. DC into the next stitch. Continue alternating sc and dc into each chain. You should end Row 1 with a DC.

Row 2: Ch 1. SC into the first DC from the previous row. DC into the next st. Continue alternating SC and DC stitches until the end of your row.

Row 3-29: Repeat row 2 for 27 more rows, or until your work measures about 9 inches. Make sure to always SC into the DC stitches in the previous row, and DC into the SC stitches in the previous row.

Now we will begin the decreases!

Row 30: Ch 1, dc2tog, *sc, dc; repeat from * until the last 2 st. Dc2tog.

Row 31: Ch 1, sc2tog, *dc, sc; repeat from * until the last 2 st. Sc2tog.

Repeat rows 30 & 31 until 8 stitches remain. With the remaining 8 stitches:
Dc2tog, sc2tog, dc2tog, sc2tog. Turn your work and ch 1.
Sc2tog twice.

Cut your yarn and fasten off. Weave in your ends.

The next step is to attach your banner to your rod.

Cut approximately 1 yard of additional yarn and thread it through your tapestry needle. Tie one end of your work to the dowel rod.

Use the remaining yarn in your tapestry needle to weave the yarn through the top of your tapestry so that it is wrapped around the dowel rod, as pictured. Once your entire tapestry is attached and you get to the end of your piece, tie the end to the dowel rod. Cut any remaining loose yarn.

For the hanging string, cut your desired length of yarn (I like to use ~15 inches or so). Tie the hanging yarn to each end of the dowel rod.

And that’s it! You now have your very own enamel pin banner to display your gorgeous collection.
