Free Crochet Pattern: The Foxglove Wristlet Keychain

Originally published at yarnbean.com in May 2021.

When I think of wristlets, I want them to be comfortable, durable, and cute. When looking for crochet wristlet patterns, I had a hard time finding a pattern that fit those criteria. Take a second to think about everything you do to your keys or wallet…. You drop them on the ground, toss them in your bag, maybe a dog (or kid) chews on them. A wristlet should be able to withstand the wear and tear that it goes through every day. This is why I wrote the Foxglove Wristlet pattern! This is an easy, beginner-friendly pattern and everyone will ADORE how they look!

The Foxglove Wristlet is great for so many reasons:

  • Great for beginners – it uses primarily foundational skills

  • Stash buster – this pattern uses so little yarn that it’s great to use with scrap yarn

  • Quick and easy – I can whip one up in about 30 minutes, and that’s while watching TV

  • Easy to customize – almost endless color combinations

All of these things make the Foxglove Wristlet great for markets. Or, if you’re not a seller, these wristlets make beautiful gifts for any occasion – bridesmaid gifts, stocking stuffers, thank you gifts, etc.

The possibilities for the Foxglove Wristlet are basically endless, so I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Supplies Needed:

  • 4mm crochet hook

  • 20-25 yards of cotton yarn (see below for my recommendations). I think that cotton/cotton blend yarn is the best for this pattern because it’s usually sturdy and can hold shape well.

  • 20 mm swivel clasp – I strongly recommend ordering this pack of 35 clasps (6 different colors) from Amazon – these clasps are very affordable and come in a great selection of colors.

  • Scissors, tape measure, yarn needle – I love this set of yarn needles from Amazon – check them out here!

Here are some of my favorite cotton/cotton blend yarns:
1. Sugar n Cream Cotton Yarns – Available through Yarnspirations here (this one is my personal favorite to use because this yarn has GREAT structure!)
2. Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton – available through Lion Brand here
3. Lion Brand ReUp – a great eco-friendly, recycled yarn. Available through Lion Brand here

Terminology and Abbreviations:

  • Chain(s) – ch(s)

  • Fasten off – FO

  • Single crochet – SC

Gauge:

Gauge is not particularly important for this pattern. You want to crochet fairly tightly so that there are no gaps in the strap of the wristlet – this is why we use such a small hook.

Instructions:

  1. Begin by making a slip knot. Ch 6.

2. Starting at the second ch from your hook, sc into the next 5 stitches (your slip knot will count as 1 st).

3. DO NOT turn your work. Pinch your work together and sc into the first sc of the row to create a loop. This is the beginning of the tube.

4. Sc into the next 4 stitches. You should have a total of 5 working stitches around the loop.

5. Continue to sc around your work without turning. I find it helpful to occasionally stop and make sure that there are 5 stitches, as the tube is worked tightly and it can sometimes be tricky to see where the stitches are!

6. Work until the wristlet strap measures 12 inches (30.5 cm) long.

7. FO and cut a working tail that measures ~12 inches.

8. Slip on the swivel clasp.

9. Place the two flat ends of the tube together. Using your yarn needle, sew the two ends together. I find that stitches running perpendicular to the rows work best. You will need to go around the joint at least two times to make sure they are held together tightly. It’s OK if the seam isn’t pretty – we’re going to cover it!

10. Once the two ends are sewn in, move the swivel closer to the joint/seam. Pinch together the wristlet, ensuring that you are pinching the seam. Take the remaining working tail around the pinched part of the strap about 15 times. This will enclose the clasp.

11.  To secure the wrapping, use your yarn needle to slide the tail up through the wrapping 1-2 times. Secure a tight not at the top of the wrapping (closest to the clasp).

12. To secure the tail, feed the yarn needle and tail through the body of the wristlet. You’ll want to push the needle through as close to the wrapping as possible, and feed it through the tube until it sticks out of another part of the tube. Pull the tail through and cut it close to the strap tube. You do not want the tail to be showing.

13. Secure the tail from your slip knot at the beginning of the strap in the same manner, feeding it through the tube and trimming the tail so that it’s no longer showing.
